- Hundreds of health and medical scientists head to Science on the Swan
- Conference runs from 8 to 10 May at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre
Science on the Swan is gaining momentum as a professional highlight for the State's health and medical scientists of the future - offering valuable partnership and networking opportunities.
The three-day conference, which started today, is designed to broaden local scientists' exposure to leading health and medical scientists from around the world and create a showcase for the very best in local research.
Science on the Swan is hosted by the WA Health Translation Network (WAHTN) - which works towards co-ordination and advocacy for translating health and medical research into practice for Western Australians.
The conference covers a mix of fundamental, biomedical, clinical, health and social science fields and offers exposure opportunities for industry and researchers.
It also connects early career scientists and researchers to more senior and established health science and clinical leaders.
Recipients of grants from the Future Health Research and Innovation (FHRI) Fund in 2020-21 will showcase their research to the public and there will be workshops advising women and early to mid-career researchers on how to apply for grants.
This year's conference theme of 'Partnering for Success' will highlight the key emerging strategic research strategies and partnerships underpinning and influencing the Western Australian medical health and research sector.
Participants will hear from several experts in their field, headlined by Dr Cathy Foley AO PSM, Australia's Chief Scientist, who will also participate in a panel with the FHRI Fund's Advisory Council.
At today's session, Medical Research Minister Stephen Dawson announced the establishment of a Sector Advisory Panel, which will include representatives from across the research community to craft the development of the WA Health and Medical Research Strategy 2023-2033 to ensure the future is bright for medical research in WA.
The Minister also announced the new WA Health Data Linkage Strategy 2022 - 2024. The Strategy will modernise, simplify and improve access to health data - making it easier for researchers to use data to inform research that will ultimately benefit patients and the Western Australian community.
