The opening of a $320 million world-class biosecurity and research facility for the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development has moved a step closer with the Expressions of Interest (EOI) for the managing contractor open on TendersWA.

The new metropolitan facility will be built on 11.3 hectares at Murdoch University's Perth campus.

The landmark investment backs the McGowan Government's efforts to reinvigorate agricultural research and development in the State and deliver strong biosecurity to respond to heightened global pest and disease threats.

The facility will include:

  • cutting-edge specialist laboratories and supporting technical workspaces to support biosecurity, market access and primary industries research and development;
  • an incident and emergency management operational centre;
  • a glasshouse complex with glasshouses, shade houses and associated facilities;
  • buildings to support research and development; and
  • field plots for on-site research.

The successful managing contractor will partner with the State Government to design and construct the new research and development precinct.

The EOI for the managing contractor closes on 19 May 2023.

Comments attributed to Finance Minister Sue Ellery:

"This is a once-in-a-generation investment to protect and grow Western Australia's primary industry for future generations.

"The managing contractor EOI process is an important step towards the new world-class metropolitan facility becoming a reality.

"This process provides the State Government with value for money and minimises risk of the project's delivery. These are two crucial factors in delivering such a major project for Western Australia."

Comments attributed to Agriculture and Food Minister Jackie Jarvis:

"The new biosecurity and research facility for the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development is a significant investment by the McGowan Government in agricultural research and biosecurity in this State.

"It is exciting to see this landmark project move to its next stage."
