New international direct air route between Jakarta and Perth

Western Australia has locked in another direct international flight route with a new AirAsia service between Jakarta and Perth.
  • New AirAsia non-stop flight between Jakarta and Perth announced today
  • Direct service to run four times a week and strengthens Perth's existing aviation connections with Indonesia
  • New service is the 13th direct international route into Perth since borders reopened

Western Australia has locked in another direct international flight route with a new AirAsia service between Jakarta and Perth.

The first flight on the new route will take off on 2 June 2023, marking the 13th new international direct flight the McGowan Government has secured since international borders reopened.

AirAsia will operate four weekly services between Jakarta and Perth on board the Airbus A320, with the increased aircraft capacity bringing an additional 700 inbound seats to Perth per week.

The new flight also re-establishes this priority route and marks the first time AirAsia has operated this service.

Indonesia is an important international market for WA, representing the State's seventh largest international market by number of visitors and ninth largest by visitor spend pre-pandemic.

More than 38,000 Indonesian visitors travelled to our State in 2019, spending an estimated $81 million in WA that same year.

The launch of the new AirAsia direct flight comes just after the new route between Manila and Perth took off on Monday, providing a direct connection between WA and the Philippines.

Tickets for the flights between Jakarta and Perth are on sale this afternoon.

Comments attributed to Tourism Minister Roger Cook:

"We have been very aggressive in pursuing direct international flights for Perth.

"We want to make it as easy as possible to get to WA for international tourists, business people and students.

"We also want to make it easier for Western Australians to travel and do business.

"It is all aimed at reaffirming Perth's reputation as the Western Gateway to Australia.

"So I am really pleased that AirAsia will be operating between Jakarta and Perth four times a week.

"This is on the back of welcoming the first flight from Manila earlier this week.

"We have now announced 13 direct flights to Perth since international border reopened.

"Many of these are on the same or similar time zone to Perth such as Manila, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Denpasar, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Jakarta.

"It's quicker to fly between Perth and Jakarta than it is from Perth to Sydney - and it's only one hour time difference.

"I strongly encourage Indonesians - particularly those with friends and family in our State - to take advantage of these fantastic new flights and visit your loved ones here in Western Australia."
