Former Legal Aid solicitor appointed WA magistrate

• Criminal law specialist Melita Medcalf appointed to the Magistrates Court
• Appointment follows important legal work in regional and remote WA
  

Attorney General John Quigley is pleased to announce the appointment of Melita Medcalf as a Magistrate of the Magistrates Court of Western Australia.

Ms Medcalf began her legal career at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in Sydney in 2011 before moving to the Pilbara to work for the Aboriginal Legal Service.

In her time in the State's North-West, Ms Medcalf worked for a not-for-profit organisation on Martu land developing an on country diversionary program.

Ms Medcalf later served as Solicitor in Charge of Legal Aid for the Pilbara from 2019 to 2021.

The criminal law specialist was recognised for her legal work being awarded the Women Lawyers (WA) Rural, Regional and Remote Woman Lawyer of The Year in 2021.

She was Director and Principal Solicitor of a legal firm she founded, providing counsel and advocacy across all court jurisdictions including the Children's and Appeal Courts.

Ms Medcalf is due to start in her new position on 20 March 2023.
