Fisheries Minister Don Punch has welcomed the results of a national survey of recreational fishing which provides valuable insights into the sector to help inform future management decisions.
The survey was released during the World Recreational Fishing Conference in Melbourne today, where researchers from the Department or Primary Industries and Regional Development are showcasing some of the State's recreational fisheries research.
The report shows that recreational fishing has maintained its popularity as a key pastime for Australians of all ages and backgrounds.
The McGowan Government invests around $18 million annually into the management of recreational fishing.
The contribution was boosted this year with an additional $10 million provided to drive innovation in management and research to help ensure the long-term sustainability of the State's fish resources.
Having a sound management foundation and ongoing investment in recreational fishing provides a platform to maximise tourism and economic potential as well as ensure the best outcomes are achieved for the Western Australian community.

"With more than 12,000 kilometres of coastline, offshore islands and unique inland fishing opportunities, WA offers some of the world's best fishing experiences.
"We know recreational fishing is a very important contributor to the economies of many of our rural and regional towns. This latest report also shows how fishing positively contributes to personal well-being, social connectivity and physical activity.
"The McGowan Government continues to support the recreational fishing sector, funding Recfishwest and using 25 per cent of the annual fishing licence fees for the Recreational Fishing Initiatives Fund, putting licence fees to work to improve recreational fishing.
"We are seeing more artificial reefs installed providing more places to fish and the continuation of projects such as the stocking of pink snapper, kingfish, trout and marron as well as the use of fish aggregation devices to ensure wonderful fishing opportunities."
