Heritage projects secure more than $1 million in funding

    8/12/2022 10:00 AM
    • $1.14 million awarded to 38 recipients through the State Government's 2022-23 Heritage Grant Program
    • Projects preserve heritage places and share the stories of Western Australia's past
    • More than $24 million in grants funding for 860 heritage projects over the past 25 years

The State Government has today announced that 38 recipients will benefit from a share in $1.14 million in funding to preserve, protect, and celebrate our heritage places as part of the 2022-23 Heritage Grants Program.

The program provides matched funding to heritage site owners for vital conservation works of heritage places, and funding assistance to local heritage managers to deliver interpretation projects that share the stories of our past.

Through the State Heritage Grants stream, 25 heritage owners have received funding to undertake urgent physical and documentation works to preserve and protect places on the State Register of Heritage Places.

Block 1 of the former Midland Railway Workshops will benefit from $100,000 in funding to restore, repair, and replace glazed window panels as part of plans to reactivate the site as an innovative health hub. The industrial workshops - built between 1902 and 1904 - were the primary employer in Midland, providing construction and maintenance services to the Western Australian Government Railways until its closure in 1994.

Through the Community Heritage Grants stream, 13 projects have been awarded up to $20,000 in funding to subsidise the cost of community engagement and interpretation projects that celebrate a State Registered Place or a place in the Heritage Council's assessment program.

The funding will support the Shire of Harvey to design and install interpretive signage in the Old Prison Gaol Cells at Harvey's No. 11 Internment Camp, marking the first time the cells will be open to visitors. The Internment Camp was used to detain more than 1000 German and Italian migrants during World War II. The project will provide visitors with an engaging and educational interpretation about the experiences of the Camp's detainees.

Comments attributed to Heritage Minister David Templeman:

"Our Government is committed to conserving and celebrating Western Australia's rich and vast history, which is intrinsically tied to our heritage places.

"These projects provide us with valuable connections to our past and the stories of who we are as Western Australians - that's why it's important we invest in these heritage sites.

"Whether it's a physical roof restoration or the development of historical signage, these projects are vital in preserving and promoting our heritage."
