    • Increased representation, engagement, and participation with decision-making will be a focus of the program

Youth Minister Dave Kelly today announced that applications were open for a new grants program to support the empowerment of Aboriginal young people and improve their mental and physical wellbeing outcomes.

The Aboriginal Youth Empowerment Grants program will offer a total of $275,000 in Department of Communities grant funding and will be administered by the Youth Affairs Council of WA.

The program will support initiatives that elevate the voice of Aboriginal young people aged 10-25 years through increased representation, engagement, and participation with decision-making.

Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs) and organisations specialising in the delivery of empowering programs for Aboriginal young people aged 10-25 years are eligible to apply for grants of between $2,000 and $25,000.

Comments attributed to Youth Minister Dave Kelly:

"Empowerment is about young people making decisions about their own lives, and getting the support needed to make this happen.

"That begins with having strong and secure foundations that allow people, families, and communities to grow and develop, and build their own futures.

"This grants program has been set up to support Aboriginal young people, a cohort within our community who have been too often overlooked.

"The funding will support new initiatives that elevate Aboriginal young people's participation and voices across government and prioritise their development and engagement."
