    Grants lock in almost $4 million in coastal conservation projects

    5/09/2022 4:00 PM

    • $3.96 million in coastal erosion grants allocated in program's second year
    • $2 million to deliver major infrastructure projects at high priority erosion hotspots
    • 50 coastal projects throughout metropolitan and regional WA to benefit
    • More than $13 million in grants provided to 109 coastal projects since 2020

    Major coastal protection projects in Esperance, Geraldton and Fremantle are among 50 projects to pocket a share in more than $3.96 million in State Government funding through the coastal erosion program.

    The grants are part of the State Government's $33.5 million strategic response to planning for the management and protection of our coast against the increasing impacts of coastal hazards and ensuring the sustainable land use and development of our coastline for the long-term.

    Grants are also targeted to help coastal land managers prepare and implement plans and strategies, and partner with community groups to undertake on-ground activities identified in coastal management plans and strategies.

    Major projects to receive grant funding through the coastal erosion program for 2022-23 include:

    • $750,000 for a permanent buried pipeline from Bandy Creek Boat Harbour to supply sand and replenish the eroded beach at Castletown Beach in Esperance;
    • $750,000 for construction of four geotextile groynes and sand replenishment at Sunset Beach in Geraldton; and
    • $500,000 to rebuild sand dunes and the upper beach at Port Beach in Fremantle.

    In addition to the grant funding, local coastal managers and community groups will contribute approximately $4.36 million in funding and in-kind donations to deliver the coastal projects in 2022-23.

    Comments attributed to Planning and Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

    "The CoastWA program continues to provide critical support and funding to coastal management agencies across the State, as they work to mitigate and adapt to the growing impact of coastal erosion.

    "The expanded funding of coastal projects through the CoastWA reflects our Government's strong commitment to addressing coastal erosion and the impacts of coastal hazards.

    "Our beaches often bear the brunt of severe weather systems, especially during the winter months, so these coastal projects are crucial to protecting our precious asset.

    "Since 2020, our Government has invested more than $13 million in 109 projects that plan for, manage and protect our coastlines against the increasing impacts of our changing climate."
