    • The new unit is based on world's best practice and will be staffed by a multi-disciplinary team
    • The McGowan Government is delivering an ongoing commitment to the needs of mental health consumers

A new world class 12 bed mental health unit has now opened at Royal Perth Hospital, adding extra beds to the public mental health system.

The unit is called "Dabakarn" and will accept its first patients today and takes its name from the Wadjuk Noongar language, meaning "slowly, slowly", to reflect its commitment to being a holistic space for healing.

The new unit will add an extra 12 beds into the mental health system and provide a valuable 24/7 tool in addressing patient flow through the busy RPH Emergency Department.

The new unit is a low stimulus environment which was developed in consultation with stakeholders and former mental health consumers.

To enable effective recovery and management, everyday it will provide a multi-disciplinary therapeutic and educational program, incorporating psychiatrists, mental health nurses, occupational therapists and social workers, amongst the dedicated team.

The new unit is based on world's best practice, with each of the 12 single rooms having its own ensuite and built-in desk. The unit also has a dining/multi-purpose space, dedicated visitor room and individual treatment areas.

Externally there is a modern outdoor recreational area featuring a mini basketball court and ping pong table, in addition to a barbeque area for communal events.

The new secure unit will accept involuntary consumers - a first for RPH - which currently only has on site a designated unit for voluntary mental health consumers.
