    • An extra $545,000 in funding to support Community Legal Centres
    • New project to help future-proof the State's community legal sector

Attorney General John Quigley has announced extra funding to assist Western Australia's community legal sector to become more sustainable.

The Government will provide $545,000 over two years to support peak group Community Legal WA with the special project.

Community Legal Centres are independent, not-for-profit organisations which provide free or low-cost services to people experiencing disadvantage such as family and domestic violence.

They play a vital role in helping resolve legal problems at an early stage and contribute to WA's broader legal assistance sector.

The project will build on work by the Department of Justice to assist the sector to become more responsive and provide improved client-centric, evidence-based services.

The latest funding for the sector follows an additional $4.5 million assistance in 2022-23 to help navigate the impacts of COVID-19 on legal needs and service delivery.

There are 23 Community Legal Centres located throughout WA.

Comments attributed to Attorney General John Quigley:

"The work done by the Community Legal Centres is often challenging and has been made more difficult because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I want to commend the resilience and adaptability shown across the sector during this time.

"I'm confident this project will help it develop into an agile and fit-for-purpose sector that can respond effectively to changes in legal need.

"I'd like to thank Community Legal Centres for their continued efforts and commitment to providing essential services to WA's most vulnerable people."
