    • Research Institute Support program to deliver $6.5 million to promote excellence in WA Medical Research Institutes
    • Funding will support indirect costs not generally covered by research grant funding
    • More than $16.5 million has been provided to WA Medical Research Institutes through the Research Institute Support program over the past 7 years

A number of high-performing Western Australian Medical Research Institutes (MRIs) will share in $6.5 million to help deliver world-class health and medical research.

The MRIs undertake research across a wide scope relating to children and adults.

Grants though the State Government's Research Institute Support (RIS) program will distribute funding for indirect costs of research.

The program assists WA MRIs to be competitive on the national and global stage by funding resources that are essential for supporting high-quality research such as utilities, shared laboratory supplies, data management and general support staff.

Including this round, the RIS program will have granted more than $23 million to WA MRIs to date.

This funding aims to support retention of high-quality researchers, create employment opportunities, increase competitiveness for national and international funding, and improve health outcomes for the WA community.

Comments attributed to Medical Research Minister Stephen Dawson:

"These grants, through the McGowan Government's Research Institute Support program, are a key initiative in attracting and retaining high-quality researchers in Western Australia.

"This funding is about providing critical resources and generating employment opportunities, and in turn helping research endeavours in WA to flourish.

"I'd like to congratulate each successful institute and I look forward to continuing to observe their contribution towards medical research in the future."
