- Pilbara ISOCo and Horizon Power reach agreement to improve regional electricity
- Critical step in implementing the McGowan Government's Pilbara electricity reforms
Pilbara ISOCo, the Independent System Operator of the Pilbara's North West Interconnected System (NWIS), has entered into an agreement with Horizon Power to perform real-time system coordination functions for the Pilbara region's electricity network.
Horizon Power will perform this role on behalf of Pilbara ISOCo and in accordance with the requirements of the Pilbara Network Rules.
Through its centralised operational desk in Bentley, Horizon Power will provide real-time system coordination of the entire NWIS.
Ring-fencing arrangements are already in place, which ensures that any commercially sensitive information Horizon Power receives is not used outside of the business.
This agreement marks an important first operational step in implementing the McGowan Government's Pilbara electricity reforms, which are aimed at facilitating competition and improving the efficiency of electricity services in the Pilbara.
Pilbara ISOCo's founding members are the three main operators of electricity networks in the region and include Horizon Power, Alinta Energy and Rio Tinto.
Comments attributed to Energy Minister Bill Johnston:
"This milestone is the first step towards operationalising the electricity reforms in the Pilbara.
"The agreement is designed to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of electricity services in the region, and support regional economic growth and development.
"I commend Alinta Energy, Horizon Power and Rio Tinto on their collaborative and constructive approach to implementing these important reforms.
"A more integrated electricity grid in the Pilbara is central to the region remaining an engine room for the State and national economies."
