    8/03/2022 7:00 AM
    • Grants of up to $50,000 now available for eligible organisations and local governments
    • Outdoor recreational organisations can also apply to be officially recognised
    • Initiatives support priorities identified in McGowan Government's Outdoors Framework

The McGowan Government is investing $400,000 to encourage more Western Australians to get active outdoors.

Eligible recreation, sporting and community organisations, not-for-profits and local governments can apply for grants between $5,000 and $50,000.

The Outdoor Active Recreation Participation Program will support innovative projects that increase participation and promote inclusion in outdoor active recreation.

At the same time, State active recreational organisations will now be able to apply for inclusion in the Government's new recognition framework.

Those approved as the pre-eminent organisation representing a particular recreational activity in WA such as bushwalking, trail riding or climbing, will get access to greater support, workshops and training, among other benefits.

Both initiatives are being administered by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.

Comments attributed to Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman:

"Whether it's walking, riding, exploring, exercising, or paddling, Western Australia has a unique outdoor lifestyle which is ideal for being active.

"Through the Outdoor Active Recreation Participation Program, the State Government is funding $400,000 worth of individual grants, up to $50,000 each, to help more Western Australians participate in outdoor recreation.

"Meanwhile the new recognition framework will help acknowledge the huge contribution leading outdoor recreation organisations - often run by volunteers - make in keeping our State healthy, happy, and connected.

"I encourage all eligible organisations to think outside the box in developing their programs and applying for funding and recognition."
