New $1.5 million upgrade to ED at Royal Perth Hospital

    • Treatment bays and consult rooms part of $1.5 million Emergency Department expansion
    • Patient privacy a feature of the reconfiguration
    • The upgraded ED comes on top of an additional 28 ICU beds for Royal Perth Hospital as part of the 530 new beds to open across the health system by October next year

An additional five treatment spaces, including two private consult rooms, will enhance the Emergency Department at Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) following the completion of a $1.5 million upgrade to its premises.

The expanded ED, opened today by Health Minister Roger Cook, is expected to create a more welcoming environment for Aboriginal patients who present to the hospital, paving the way for increased uptake of care from within the Aboriginal community.

The new consult rooms will support a greater level of patient privacy and Aboriginal Health Liaison Officers (AHLOs) will be appointed to the ED, to provide a culturally welcoming presence for Aboriginal patients seven days a week.

More than just a friendly face, the AHLOs will support patients such as those who may be attending alone from remote parts of the State - or who may require other forms of assistance.

The boost to ED capacity will improve overall access to care for all patients.

The additional treatment bays, which bring the total across RPH's ED to 38, are expected to reduce patient wait times and enable treatment to start earlier in patients triaged as urgent.

Work on the ED upgrade commenced six months ago and followed the allocation in 2019 of $1.5 million in McGowan Government funding.

Comments attributed to Health Minister Roger Cook:

"I welcome the benefits that will flow to Western Australians from the expansion of Royal Perth Hospital's Emergency Department.

"The employment of AHLOs will create a more Aboriginal-friendly ED environment and will break down barriers to Aboriginal people accessing healthcare.

"The McGowan Government continues to make significant investments in our hospitals, including our $1.9 billion investment in health and mental health in this year's State Budget.

"We are making sure that when COVID-19 arrives in WA we can continue to keep Western Australians safe."
