    • Perth to host an international science conference and a performing arts congress in 2024
    • Events to attract hundreds of delegates from around the world
    • Conferences secured by Business Events Perth, funded by the McGowan Government through Tourism WA

Hundreds of delegates from around the world will converge on Perth in 2024 to discuss the use of radio and infrared frequencies in fields as diverse as space science, nuclear fusion and biology as part of an international science conference.

The 49th International Conference on Infrared, Millimeter and Terahertz Waves has been secured for Western Australia, which will mark the first time the event has been held in Australia in 12 years.

The McGowan Government, through Tourism WA, provides funding to Business Events Perth (BE Perth) to attract outstanding conferences to the State and strengthen WA's reputation as a desirable destination for business events.

The event will bring together some of the world's top international researchers to discuss the evolution of the use of ultra-high frequencies in areas such as health, environmental science and telecommunication.

The six-day conference is the largest of its kind and is expected to inject more than $3 million into the WA economy.

Perth has also been named as the host of the 2024 International Society for the Performing Arts (ISPA) Congress - another large-scale event which will bring more than 500 delegates to the State. This is also expected to inject more than $3 million into the State's economy.

It's the first time the ISPA Congress will come to Perth. It's previously been held in Melbourne and Sydney, and at global destinations such as New York and Guadalajara, Mexico.

In 2020-21, BE Perth secured 67 national and international business events set to occur in WA up to 2024, which will boost the State's economy by more than $54 million.

Funding from the McGowan Government through Tourism Western Australia enabled BE Perth to directly support the staging of 190 local business events, connecting more than 82,000 delegates across the State assisting industry recovery and local jobs.

Comments attributed to Tourism Minister David Templeman:

"Through Tourism WA, we're proud to support Business Events Perth to attract delegates to our State through events such as the International Conference on Infrared, Millimeter and Terahertz Waves, and the International Society of Performing Arts Conference.

"These international events will be a great chance for attendees from across the world to discover the wonderful offerings of Perth and I encourage everyone to stay longer and explore regional WA.

"I'm excited to welcome these events to WA in 2024. To be named as the host of two different internationally recognised conferences within a week highlights our State as an incredible business events and holiday destination, as well as a great science and creative hub."

Comments attributed to Science Minister Roger Cook:

"Research developments in this field have potential applications to sectors such as space science, medical research and communications.

"We look forward to hosting more than 600 conference delegates in Perth, including international researchers from around the world.

"The six-day conference is an opportunity for local researchers to exchange scientific and technical knowledge, and to showcase research being conducted here in Western Australia."
