    2/08/2021 9:00 AM
    • More than 600 employees will transition to the public sector today
    • Staff working in the cleaning, patient catering and internal logistics at Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) are now employees of the South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS)
    • McGowan Government election commitment delivered

From today staff working in the cleaning, patient catering and internal logics of Fiona Stanley Hospital will be run by the public sector, delivering a McGowan Government election commitment.

The 633 staff working in these areas are now employed by the South Metropolitan Health Service with most staff choosing to work for the State Government.

The services had previously been provided by Serco Australia as part of a contract to run non-clinical services at FSH. Serco will continue to run 21 other services at the hospital under the existing contract, which extends to 2027.

SMHS, Serco and the Department of Health have worked closely together over the past 16 months to transition the services to the public sector and ensure they continue to run safely and effectively for patients.

Staff have been offered continuity of employment in line with public sector standards and significant support has been provided to them throughout the transition process.

Comments attributed to Health Minister Roger Cook:

"Today delivers our election commitment to put patients first, and bring services back into the public sector where it is responsible to do so.

"More than 600 new staff will transition to the South Metropolitan Health Service team working at Fiona Stanley Hospital.

"We have been able to deliver on this important policy because of our responsible financial management over the past four and a half years.

"The McGowan Government will continue to ensure we provide safe, high quality and sustainable health care for all Western Australians."
