Joint media statement - METRONET Midland Station a step closer with preferred proponent chosen

    25/08/2021 7:30 AM

Midland Junction Alliance (McConnell Dowell Constructors, Georgiou Group, Arcadis Australia and BG&E) has been named the preferred proponent to deliver the new METRONET Midland Station.

Work includes decommissioning and demolishing the existing 53-year-old train station and the design and construction of a new facility between Helena and Cale streets.

The station's contemporary design will incorporate three platforms catering for up to six-cars, a publicly accessible pedestrian overpass connecting both sides of the railway, a bus interchange and cycling facilities.

Once open, the new station is expected to have 3,300 daily boardings, growing to 3,700 in 2031.

Passengers will have a 25-minute, two-zone journey to the Perth CBD.

The alliance contract is expected to be awarded later this year.

The project is jointly funded by the Australian and Western Australian governments, with the Australian Government committing $82.5 million.

Comments attributable to Federal Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts Paul Fletcher:

"The Morrison Government is getting on with delivering infrastructure projects that improve public transport for communities across Australia, making it easier to move around our capital cities and access retail and commercial precincts.

"METRONET will play a critical role in supporting the growth of Perth and is just one of the many major projects to receive funding from the Morrison Government as part of its record $110 billion, 10-year infrastructure investment pipeline, which is helping to drive Australia's world-leading economic recovery."

Comments attributable to WA Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"Replacing the Midland Station was a key McGowan Government election commitment and we have reached a key milestone in the project today by announcing the preferred proponent.

"Midland is an important retail, commercial and medical hub and this project will allow the station to continue playing a central role connecting visitors with these businesses and services.

"The new station will bring an economic, social and environmental boost to the Midland city centre, while supporting local jobs during construction."

Comments attributable to Federal Member for Hasluck Ken Wyatt:

"The Morrison Government continues to deliver on crucial infrastructure projects, improving access for Hasluck residents and others travelling through our region.

"This $82.5 million investment by our Government to replace the Midland Station will drive investment for our region, helping to create local jobs and supporting local businesses.

"Hasluck residents and businesses can look forward to welcoming an increase in tourism with the streamlined connection into Perth's CBD.

"The train service from Midland to Perth is vital in ensuring our region is connected and accessible for both local residents and businesses.

"This is part of the Morrison Government's plan to build a stronger, more resilient local community right here in Hasluck."
