Planning Minister Rita Saffioti today released the final East Wanneroo District Structure Plan that sets a long-term vision for the growing area.

The plan sets a 50-year vision for the development of more than 8,000 hectares of land in Perth's northern suburbs which will cater for 150,000 residents, 50,000 homes and support up to 20,000 jobs.

A key priority was guiding how the area's sensitive water resources will be managed.

The strategy has now been approved by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, meaning hundreds of market gardeners, hobby farmers and long-term residents can move forward with plans to realise the value of their investment.

This State Government-led structure plan provides for 50,000 new dwellings, a district town centre, six high schools, and the potential creation of 280 hectares of new Parks and Recreation reserves including native bushland and wetlands.

The area includes parts of Wanneroo, Mariginiup, Gnangara, Jandabup and Pinjar.

More than 450 submissions were received on the draft plan and considered by the Western Australian Planning Commission.

Comments attributed to Planning Minister Rita Saffioti:

"This district structure plan was completed by the State Government - we took on the challenge to develop a long-term vision that would address development challenges in this area and ensure future provision of essential community infrastructure.

"The new plan now provides certainty for hundreds of landowners and long-term rural residents and has been developed in consultation with a range of stakeholders including local government, a community reference group and the Whadjuk Working Party.

"This long-term vision will provide for future growth in one of Perth's fastest growing regions and capitalise on our investment in METRONET and major road projects across our north-eastern suburbs."

Comments attributed to Wanneroo MLA Sabine Winton:

"The East Wanneroo District Structure Plan is the final piece of the puzzle after almost 20 years of planning for this area.

"The plan includes all of the essential elements of a new community, including district centres and regional playing fields, lots of parkland and open space, future schools and transport connections and a mix of land uses that bring vibrancy and local job opportunities for residents.

"I can't wait to see our local community develop and grow."
