    • $1.15 million in grants available for infrastructure and educational programs to reduce waste and increase material recovery
    • Funding builds on $6 million provided through the program since 2017

Organisations can now apply for their share of more than $1.15 million to help reduce waste and increase material recovery as part of the WasteSorted grant program.

Administered by the Waste Authority, the grants have provided more than $6 million for waste management initiatives in Western Australia since 2017.

Applications are assessed on a competitive basis and businesses, charitable recycling organisations, local governments, regional councils, peak industry bodies, not-for-profit organisations, and research and educational institutions are encouraged to apply.

Grants of up to $250,000 per project are available for infrastructure development and up to $50,000 per project for waste avoidance and resource recovery education programs.

Infrastructure funding in 2021-22 will prioritise projects that improve organics recycling, and construction and demolition waste recovery.

Funding for waste avoidance and resource recovery education will focus on materials including food and garden organics, construction and demolition waste, glass, metals, paper and cardboard, plastics, textiles and non-household hazardous waste.

Previous grants include $245,000 for WA Recycling to fund separation equipment that recovers civil, construction and demolition materials; $250,000 to Southern Metropolitan Regional Council for a food and garden organics shredder; and $49,756 to the Western Australian Local Government Association to develop guidelines and pilot better practice materials recovery in multiple unit dwellings.

A webinar on how to apply for a WasteSorted grant will be held at 10:30am on August 13, 2021.

For more information on the WasteSorted grants, the webinar, or to apply for funding, visit the WasteSorted Grants webpage, email wsg@dwer.wa.gov.au or phone 6364 6945.

Applications close at noon on Monday, September 13, 2021.

"WasteSorted grants back programs that improve the way Western Australia manages waste and supports our goal of becoming a sustainable, low-waste circular economy.

"I encourage community, business and local government groups to take advantage of this funding opportunity and get involved in improving avoidance, recovery and reuse of waste in WA."
