    • Festival set to celebrate local history and culture in the Wheatbelt

Premier Mark McGowan met with the Shire of Merredin today and presented a $25,000 Lotterywest grant to support the inaugural Merredin Memorial Festival.

The three-day festival, which starts on Friday September 24, will commemorate the town's heritage, agricultural industry and Aboriginal culture. It will also pay tribute to Merredin's military history, with the Festival dubbed 'Troops, Trains, and Treasures.'

An immersive media display at night will also feature, lighting up local heritage buildings to help share the historical significance of Merredin during World War II.

The $25,000 grant, provided through Lotterywest, will support costs towards the festival, in particular to support family friendly activities, market stalls and concerts.

This grant has been part of the record breaking $864.9 million return to the Western Australian community in Lotterywest prizes and grants in the 2020-21 financial year.

Comments attributed to Premier Mark McGowan:

"I'm delighted to present this Lotterywest grant to the Shire of Merredin for this exciting new festival.

"Lotterywest's COVID-19 Relief Fund was a swift response by the State Government to reprioritise its grant making to help the local community recover from the impact of the pandemic.

"This grant is an example of how not for profit groups and local governments are working to engage their community, by celebrating local history and culture.

"Western Australia is fortunate to have the only State-owned lottery in Australia where the profits are returned back to the community."
