Australia and New Zealand to face-off in Perth Pro League hockey series

    25/06/2021 2:35 PM
    • Hockeyroos and Kookaburras to play against New Zealand teams in Perth this weekend
    • Last national games on Australian soil before Tokyo Olympics

This weekend, Western Australian sporting fans will have the exciting opportunity to see both of the national men's and women's hockey teams, the Hockeyroos and Kookaburras, in action against the New Zealand national teams in Perth.

These matches will likely be the Hockeyroos' and Kookaburras' last games on Australian soil before competing at the Tokyo Olympics.

WA fans will get the opportunity to see world-class hockey played this Saturday and Sunday at Curtin University's Perth Hockey Stadium.

The games are part of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Hockey Pro League.

The FIH Hockey Pro League is an annual global home and away league involving the world's best men's and women's international hockey nations.

The games follow the four-match series between the two nations in New Zealand in May, where both Australian teams delivered strong performances.

The New Zealand series was the first international competition the Hockeyroos and Kookaburras had taken part in since March 2020, when COVID restrictions came in to place.

Comments attributed to Sport and Recreation Minister Tony Buti:

"It's very exciting these international Pro League matches are being played here in Perth over the weekend.

"After what was a very challenging year for elite-level sport in 2020, these matches are a very welcome addition to WA's sporting events calendar.

"The McGowan Government is committed to supporting the development of sport in Western Australia and hockey is no exception.

"These games give, not only WA hockey fans, but young, aspiring hockey players the chance to get along to one of the games and watch their idols play at the highest level.

"With these games likely being both the Hockeyroos' and the Kookaburras' last before the Olympics, I encourage all sporting fans to get out and support both teams."
