    • Unique event designed to inspire next generation of suitability champions

Future sustainability champions from eight Western Australian high schools have presented their bright ideas for our State's waterwise future at a special event attended by Water Minister Dave Kelly today.

Hosted by Water Corporation and the Innovation Institute, the 2021 WA Schools Think Tank Challenge brought together teams of Year 9 and 10 students from secondary schools across Perth, the South-West and Great Southern.

Students were encouraged to employ innovative problem-solving techniques to help inspire people to remain waterwise in the face of the impacts of climate change and reduced rainfall.

They also learnt about how traditional owners have been the custodians of WA's water systems for more than 60,000 years.

In total, more than 180 students from 22 high schools took part in one of four workshops, with eight finalists today presenting to a panel of water industry experts at Water Corporation.

Students from Fremantle College were crowned the challenge winners for their campaign to develop a sink tap and outdoor hose that has flow settings for different purposes. For example, brushing your teeth or washing your hands would have separate settings that reduce flow.

The other seven school finalists were Girrawheen Senior High School, Mount Lawley Senior High School, St Norbert College (Queens Park), Rossmoyne Senior High School, Peter Moyes Anglican Community School, Bunbury Senior High School and Great Southern Grammar Albany.

Supported by the McGowan Government, the 2021 WA Schools Think Tank Challenge provides a platform for young people to voice their hopes and aspirations for WA's sustainable water future.

Comments attributed to Water Minister Dave Kelly:

"Climate change is having a very real impact on how we source and supply water, meaning we all have a responsibility to use every drop wisely.

"Through the WA Schools Think Tank Challenge, we're not only educating young people about the impacts of climate change but also involving them in designing solutions.

"When it comes to issues of environment and sustainability, we know young people - our future leaders - are incredibly passionate. It's fantastic to see an event which allows them to put innovation into action to promote the waterwise message.

"On behalf of the McGowan Government, congratulations to Fremantle College and all participating schools, and to Water Corporation and the Innovation Institute for hosting such a unique event."
