Joint media statement - Disaster assistance following Pilbara and Goldfields flooding

    22/04/2021 3:25 PM

Disaster assistance has been made available to help communities in the Pilbara and Goldfields regions recover from damage caused by storms and flooding in late 2020.

Assistance is being provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Minister for Emergency Management David Littleproud said the severe weather system caused significant damage to telecommunications infrastructure and flooded local roads.

"This financial assistance will help the local governments of East Pilbara, Laverton and Port Hedland to repair damaged roads and clean-up costs," Minister Littleproud said.

"By providing funding for practical assistance such as clean-up operations and repair of public infrastructure, we're also helping communities get back on their feet as quickly as possible.

"I know that communities in the region are resilient and, with the support of the Australian and WA Governments, they will recover strongly from this set-back."

Western Australian Minister for Emergency Services Reece Whitby said that in December 2020, a low-pressure system crossed the Pilbara coast bringing damaging winds and heavy rainfall over a 48-hour period.

"The rainfall caused water to rapidly rise across floodways and roads with emergency services conducting five rescue operations to assist people stranded by floodwaters," Minister Whitby said.

"Rivers overflowed and roads were completely submerged, causing serious damage.

"The financial assistance provided by the funding arrangements will assist local governments to repair the local road network without the burden of the cost falling on the local community."
