A new $1.2 million program at two Perth primary schools will support the development and learning of young children who speak English as an additional language before they start school.
Maylands Peninsula Primary School and Bentley Primary School will trial the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Early Years Link program in 2021 for children aged three years and under.
The program provides playgroup sessions for six hours a week, with high levels of involvement from families. External agencies will also provide any additional support required.
Similar to KindiLink for Aboriginal families with children before school age, the program offers high quality play-and-learn sessions for children and their parents or carers at no cost.
Both school communities have a significant number of culturally and linguistically diverse students.
Teachers and ethnic education assistants at Maylands Peninsula Primary School and Bentley Primary School will have training and ongoing professional support to implement and deliver the program.
Comments attributed to Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:
"We want families with young children who speak a language other than English to get all the support they need before their children start school.
"It will help build the capacities and confidence of culturally and linguistically diverse families by developing strong relationships with school staff and their communities, introducing a smooth transition to kindergarten, and providing strong links with external services."
Comments attributed to Maylands MLA Lisa Baker:
"I am thrilled Maylands Peninsula Primary School will trial the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Early Years Link program in 2021.
"This new program will help progress the learning of young children with an emphasis on family support."
