    • 121 Serpentine transforming the Albany CBD precinct
    • 40-bed accommodation facility to support local tertiary education sector

Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan today opened the Albany Affordable Student Housing project, another step forward in transforming the Albany central business district precinct into a connected community centre.

The McGowan Government invested almost $11 million into the $16 million, 40-bed accommodation facility, which will support further growth of the Great Southern tertiary education sector.

The 121 Serpentine facility, operated by Advance Housing, is located on the site of the old Albany Primary School and forms a key part of the Albany CBD precinct.

The project was designed by local firm H+H Architects and constructed by local builders Wauters Enterprises, delivering a significant boost to local jobs and the regional economy.

Students using the facility will be from the region, elsewhere in Western Australia or Australia, international or those undertaking intensive or fieldwork units as part of a degree.

The State Government has supported the significant transformation of the Albany CBD, including the historic Albany Town Hall redevelopment, the Alison Hartman Gardens revitalisation and the Albany Tourism and Information Hub.

Comments attributed to Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:

"Our Government is transforming the heart of Albany, investing in projects like the 121 Serpentine student accommodation facility and the Town Hall redevelopment to create a modern, thriving CBD and encourage tertiary students to Albany.

"The 40-bed Albany student accommodation facility will allow Albany's tertiary education sector to continue to grow, providing affordable housing options for students from across the region, the State and the country.

"This project provided a timely stimulus for the local construction sector, with our Government's commitment to local content ensuring this work went to contractors based in the Great Southern, driving local jobs."
