    • $1.58 million redevelopment set for Mount Barker Memorial Swimming Pool facilities
    • Fifty-year-old facility to receive new change rooms, toilets, kiosk and clubrooms
    • Construction set to commence in March 2021

The historic Mount Barker Memorial Swimming Pool is set to receive a major refurbishment made possible by an investment of more than $374,000 by the McGowan Government.

Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray today visited the facility, which is set to receive a grant through the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF).

Built in 1971, the facility includes a six-lane, 50-metre swimming pool with an additional children's pool and basic change rooms, kiosk and toilets, and is home to the Mount Barker swimming club.

In February, the facility will also host the 2021 SunSmart Country Pennants, sponsored by Healthway, bringing swimmers all the way from Broome to Albany together to compete against other regional clubs from across the State.

The first stage of the project includes the construction of a new amenities building incorporating the change rooms, toilets, first aid room, a kiosk, administration office and clubrooms.

Subsequent stages of the refurbishment will include an upgraded 50-metre pool, and the construction of a new learn to swim pool, plant room and filtration system.

Additional upgrades to the solar heating and landscaping and development of recreational areas will also occur.

The redevelopment was made possible by the State Government's $374,183 CSRFF grant, administered by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.

The remaining funding was provided by the Shire of Plantagenet and the Federal Government.

Comments attributed to Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray:

"This is a great example of supporting our regional communities and providing current facilities that support the health and wellbeing of the local community.

"The ageing facilities in Mount Barker are held in great affection by the local community but, being built 50 years ago, upgrades are now required to ensure they can be used for many more years to come.

"I am pleased that through the State Government's CSRFF grant program, we have been able to bring this refurbishment to fruition, and deliver better aquatic facilities for the Mount Barker community and beyond."
