    • McGowan Government commits $400,000 to trial an additional weekly flight between Kununurra and Balgo via Halls Creek
    • Funding brings route frequency into line with other regional WA air services and will commence in February 2021
    • Part of McGowan Government's $24.4 million commitment to regional aviation recovery
    • McGowan Government committed to delivery of affordable and accessible regional flights

The McGowan Government has committed $400,000 towards an additional weekly flight between Kununurra and Balgo, in the State's North-West.

This will be the third weekly service between Balgo and Kununurra, via Halls Creek, and is due to commence in February 2021.

The Kununurra-Halls Creek-Balgo air route is the only one in regional Western Australia that currently has less than three return services per week.

Aviair currently provides two return air services per week between Balgo and Kununurra, via Halls Creek, with the route subsidised by the State and Commonwealth governments.

The additional weekly flight will ensure Balgo and Halls Creek residents have access to regular flights to and from Kununurra, which is crucial as the service is largely used by communities to access health and other key services.

In 2020, the McGowan Government committed $24.4 million to regional aviation recovery in Western Australia, benefiting regional travellers, tourism and the WA economy.

Comments attributed to Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"We've allocated $400,000 towards an additional weekly flight between Balgo and Kununurra, via Halls Creek.

"Many people in Balgo use these flights to access medical services, so it's important there are regular and reliable services available, particularly during the wet season.

"Our Government has allocated $24 million towards supporting the aviation industry's recovery from COVID-19.

"We are continuing to work with airlines and the Commonwealth to ensure affordable and accessible flights in regional WA."
