    • New district structure plan sets long-term vision for fast growing metropolitan region
    • 150,000 residents set to call East Wanneroo home over the next 50 years

Planning Minister Rita Saffioti today confirmed approval of a new district structure plan that will guide the future development of more than 8,000 hectares of land in Perth's northern suburbs.

The East Wanneroo District Structure Plan is the result of consultation with local government, community and relevant government agencies and will provide a 50-year vision for urban growth, catering for 150,000 residents and creating up to 20,000 jobs.

The plan provides certainty for a generation of market gardeners, hobby farmers and long-term rural residents to realise the value of their investment, while making way for the development of new communities and families moving into the area.

Encompassing parts of Wanneroo, Mariginiup, Gnangara, Jandabup and Pinjar, the structure plan provides for 50,000 new dwellings, a district town centre, six schools, and more than 2,000ha of parkland and regional sporting fields.

Following public consultation in late 2019, the district structure plan has been updated to include provision for an additional high school, modify some parkland and road network provisions and provide guidance for water management in the area.

The district structure plan will be released in its final form once the strategy for managing the area's sensitive water resources has been given final approval by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation.

Delivery of the Morley-Ellenbrook rail line as part of the McGowan Government's METRONET program will facilitate new development opportunities across Perth's north-eastern suburbs with the East Wanneroo District Structure Plan well placed to support that future growth.

Comments attributed to Planning Minister Rita Saffioti:

"The State Government adopted a strategic planning approach for East Wanneroo and took on the challenge to develop a long-term vision that would address development challenges in this area and ensure future provision of essential community infrastructure.

"We have developed a long-term vision to provide for future growth in one of Perth's fastest growing regions and capitalise on the Government's investment in METRONET and major road projects across our north-eastern suburbs.

"This structure plan delivers certainty to more than 1,650 individual landowners; but more importantly, it facilitates a co-ordinated development approach to ensure the future community is well designed and serviced, complete with local amenities and community facilities.

"Years of ad hoc planning for the area have been resolved with the release of this structure plan which prioritises the needs of our growing population and prevents a piecemeal approach to development in the region."

Comments attributed to Wanneroo MLA Sabine Winton:

"The East Wanneroo District Structure Plan culminates more than 20 years of planning for this area and sets a way forward for many local residents and landowners.

"The plan includes all of the essential elements of a new community, including district centres and regional playing fields, lots of parkland and open space, future schools and transport connections and a mix of land uses that bring vibrancy and local job opportunities for residents.

"I commend the State Government on undertaking this strategic planning exercise and look forward to supporting residents as they move towards development, or welcoming new residents moving into the area."
