    • Expansion creates 100 jobs for local Kalgoorlie-Boulder community
    • Core library samples help industry search for the next big resource discovery

Site works have commenced at the Joe Lord Core Library expansion in Kalgoorlie.

Local indigenous business Yonga Djena has been appointed to complete the site works, while building contractor ACorp Construction will source employees from the local area.
A local indigenous artist will create original artwork for the project.

The McGowan Government announced $7 million of funding in July to support the core library extension as part of its COVID-19 Goldfields-Esperance Recovery Plan.

The world-class library stores core samples containing valuable geoscientific information for exploration companies and others searching for new resource discoveries.

Researchers and explorers can inspect the samples and review results to reduce the technical and financial risk of exploration activities. The extension will provide better access, more space and improved facilities to view and analyse the drill cores.

Construction is due to start in early February with expected completion in late 2021.

Comments attributed to Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Johnston:

"The McGowan Government is committed to supporting our regions and the expansion of the Joe Lord Core Library is a great example.

"The impact of COVID-19 has hit regional WA particularly hard, so we will continue to invest in local communities to deliver economic and social benefits.

"Measures to reduce exploration risk and attract investment will ensure the resources sector continues to be the powerhouse of WA's economy.

"The McGowan Government has also invested an extra $5 million in the Exploration Incentive Scheme to further boost exploration activity."

Comments attributed to Mining and Pastoral Region MLC Kyle McGinn:

"It's great to see earthworks have begun at the Joe Lord Core Library in Kalgoorlie, especially as the majority of the workforce has been sourced locally. Under the McGowan Government's Plan for Jobs, we're seeing more contracts being awarded locally.

"The expansion will be a welcome inclusion for our mining community once complete."
