    23/12/2020 9:00 AM
    • Five dwellings in Kununurra have been leased to an Aboriginal corporation in Kununurra to house Aboriginal trainees and apprentices
    • Part of the State Government's Employment and Education Housing Program that supports employment or training in areas where there are employment opportunities

Aboriginal trainees can now live near where they work or train thanks to the leasing of five State Government dwellings in Kununurra.

The three houses and two units will enable the Yawoorroong Miriuwung Gajerrong Yirrgeb Noong Dawang Aboriginal Corporation (MG Corporation) to accommodate up to 10 trainees and apprentices.

The initiative is part of the State Government's Employment and Education Housing Program, which provides supported affordable accommodation for Aboriginal people to undertake or access training in areas where there are employment opportunities.

The Government, through the Department of Communities, owns five Kununurra dwellings that are part of the program.

Kununurra-based MG Corporation represents the interests of the Miriuwung and Gajerrong people who are native title holders in the East Kimberley region.

Comments attributed to Housing Minister Peter Tinley:

"This is a fantastic initiative that assists Aboriginal people to pursue their training and employment ambitions.

"The housing provides safe, affordable spaces where these young people can focus on their work and studies."

Comments attributed to Kimberley MLA Josie Farrer:

"I am very pleased with the work that the Minister has done in providing these houses. This will mean that the trainees and apprentices can stay close to where they work and focus on their futures. Well done.

"It is vital that all young Aboriginal people - wherever they are from in Western Australia - have as many opportunities as they can to achieve their full potential."
