Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery has today announced that an architect has been appointed to progress plans for a brand new education support hub at Malibu School in Perth's south.

Bateman Architects will design a new $3.6 million education support block to provide students with state-of-the-art specialist facilities.

The new block will have dedicated learning areas for science, art and music, along with four general classrooms.

In addition, there will be staff offices, a therapy room, nurses station, first aid room and toilets for staff and students.

Malibu School is an education support school that caters for students from kindergarten to Year 12 with intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, sensory impairments and autism spectrum disorders.

The school has specially trained staff and purpose-built facilities to give students the best possible education tailored to their needs. There are currently 110 students enrolled.

Construction on the new block is anticipated to commence in early 2021 and completed for the start of the 2022 school year.

This project is funded by the McGowan Government's WA Recovery Plan. More than $492 million of new funding has been committed to construction projects at Western Australian public schools over the next four years.

Comments attributed to Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:

"We're committed to providing students in Western Australia with the best possible facilities so that they can learn and thrive.

"Staff at Malibu School have specialist training and skills to cater for students with special education needs.

"These new facilities will give staff and students a fantastic opportunity to expand their lessons in the exciting and hands-on areas of science, art and music."

Comments attributed to Rockingham MLA Mark McGowan:

"This new education support hub at Malibu School is a welcome announcement. We are continually investing in our State's future and that starts in our schools.

"This expansion will allow Rockingham families to participate and become more involved in multiple learning areas to encourage children to learn and play in a safe environment.

"Malibu School delivers important work for students with intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, sensory impairments and autism spectrum disorders. Last year we funded over $1 million to address high priority maintenance works at Malibu School, and I'm pleased to continue supporting our local schools.

"Our local kids deserve to be learning in the best possible school facilities and this investment will help make this a reality."
