    • Volunteers to be acknowledged and celebrated with local events
    • Grants up to $1,000 issued to 33 organisations across WA
    • Events will mark Thank a Volunteer Day in WA on December 5

Community organisations and local government authorities across Western Australia have been funded to acknowledge and celebrate the role of volunteers.

The Department of Communities is providing a total of $29,781 in grant funding to support community events and activities for Thank a Volunteer Day on Saturday, December 5.

The Thank a Volunteer Day Grants Program supports communities in acknowledging and celebrating the generous contribution of WA's volunteers to the community.

Grants of up to $1,000 have been given to 33 eligible organisations to deliver a range of events and activities including award ceremonies, workshops, seminars, morning and afternoon teas and excursions.

The United Nations designated December 5 each year as International Volunteer Day - known as Thank a Volunteer Day in WA - in 1985.

Thank a Volunteer Day events will be required to adhere to State Government directions on COVID-19 Safety Plans and Guidelines.

Comments attributed to Seniors and Ageing and Volunteering Minister Mick Murray:

"Many volunteer organisations came to the fore to help our most vulnerable during the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic earlier this year, and many of this year's Thank a Volunteer Day events will be specifically thanking the volunteers who helped keep our communities going during these unprecedented times.

"It's estimated that about 80 per cent of Western Australians are involved in volunteer work of some kind, and the socio-economic and cultural value of volunteering to Western Australia measures well into the billions of dollars.

"Volunteers contribute significantly toward the economic and social development of our society - and Thank a Volunteer Day events are an important way to celebrate and recognise these contributions."
