    • Iredale Pedersen Hook Architects Pty Ltd to design Roebourne District High School and TAFE
    • Investment in redevelopments totals $47 million
    • Karratha-based Hurley Architecture and Planning will work as a consultant
    • Roebourne community will collaborate with State Government on planning

Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery has today announced that Iredale Pedersen Hook Architects Pty Ltd has been appointed to design the major redevelopment of Roebourne District High School and upgrades to the adjacent TAFE campus.

The school is a $42 million project - from kindergarten through to secondary school areas - and will have new facilities designed to inspire Aboriginal students.

The $5 million TAFE rebuild will see a new classroom block built, a general modernisation of campus amenities and the demolition of several 40-year-old demountable buildings.

The Roebourne campus plays a key role in connecting the local Aboriginal community to vocational education and training, and the architects have been briefed to design world-class facilities that are culturally appropriate.

The Roebourne community will collaborate with the State Government on the planning of the new designs with the voices of students and parents reflected in every stage of the development.

It is intended that the new designs will provide greater opportunities for all staff and students to understand and respect Aboriginal history, culture and language and create meaningful local jobs in the process.

Local business Hurley Architecture and Planning will be appointed to work as a consultant for the project.

Construction is expected to create jobs for more than 150 workers.

The redevelopments are part of the McGowan Government's $5.5 billion WA Recovery Plan that will stimulate the economy and create local jobs post COVID-19.

Comments attributed to Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:

"I visited Roebourne recently so I could hear firsthand from the elders, and wider community, what they wanted in their education and training facilities, and how they can best serve those who live in the area.

"These are really exciting projects that will help connect Roebourne and I am thrilled that the design will reflect the input of the Aboriginal community, and look forward to seeing the work from Iredale Pedersen Hook Architects.

"It gives me a great deal of satisfaction that we can continue to invest so heavily in the Pilbara region and provide first-class education and learning environments for students and teachers."

Comments attributed to Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel:

"I am so happy to see this progressing quickly as I understand what the school and TAFE mean to the local community.

"I have been in frequent discussion with the elders in Roebourne for a long time about redeveloping the high school and TAFE.

"These major community building projects are something I have advocated strongly for on behalf of the Roebourne people, and I am extremely proud to be part of a Government that is delivering such terrific education and training outcomes for the Pilbara."
