    • Education and Training Minister launches exciting new work placement initiative for public school students
    • Students to gain invaluable on the job training in State Government agencies
    • Pilot program will start this month

Secondary students in Western Australian public schools have the chance to be part of an innovative new initiative that will prepare them for their life after school.

Launched by Education and Training Minster Sue Ellery at the Western Australian Council of State School Organisations (WACSSO) conference, the Work Placement Register has been developed to help students undertaking Vocational Education and Training secure work placements in Government agencies.

Students will gain real world experience in jobs relevant to their training and will take part in an application process for a placement.

There are about 50 placements available in a range of agencies in roles such as facilities management, event management, grounds and maintenance, business administration, information technology and outdoor recreation.

Students will be placed at the Departments of Education; Communities; Local Government,

Sport and Cultural Industries; and Training and Workforce Development.

An online register can be accessed by Government agencies and public schools to post vacancies and facilitate student applications.

Successful students will start placements from this month.

Comments attributed to Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:

"Work placement has always been a wonderful way for students to gain hands on experience. I'm thrilled this initiative, which was developed as a result of a request by WACSSO, will give them even greater opportunities for invaluable on the job training.

"These students are the future of our workforce and we want to give them the best chance to use the skills they've learnt in their VET studies in the real world.

"This initiative enables students to explore a range of exciting pathways in the public sector and ultimately help shape their career choices."
