    • McGowan Government continuing to invest in regional schools

Premier Mark McGowan and Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery today announced the scope of works for the Hedland Senior High School upgrades.

The McGowan Government has allocated $15 million to Hedland Senior High School for much-needed upgrades following advocacy from local MLA Kevin Michel and the school community.

The scope of works includes a new sports hall with staff facilities and four general learning classrooms.

Refurbishments across the school will include STEM facilities, IT laboratories, home economics laboratory, child care vocational training room and the Education Support Centre. Hardie House will receive a major refurbishment.

The Hedland Senior High School community has been consulted and worked closely with the Department of Education to determine the scope of works.

T&Z Architects will work on the design for the new build at Hedland Senior High School while MPS Architects has been appointed for the upgrades to Hardie House.

Work on the upgrades is due to start in July with practical completion scheduled for the second half of 2021. The project is expected to create more than 290 jobs.

This $15 million investment is in addition to the $1.23 million investment in April 2019 for urgent maintenance and $639,555 as part of the McGowan Government's $200 million School Maintenance Blitz for roof replacement and upgrades, carpark repairs, electrical upgrades and structural integrity improvements.

Today's announcement reinforces the McGowan Government's commitment to improving school infrastructure throughout Western Australia.

Comments attributed to Premier Mark McGowan:

"Hedland Senior High School has been serving the local community for nearly 50 years and has educated thousands of Western Australians.

"But in recent years, it has become clear that the school needed some essential upgrades.

"Therefore, I'm pleased we have been able to provide a substantial investment of $15 million for a range of new facilities and refurbishments.

"This comes on top of recent allocations of $1.23 million for urgent maintenance and $639,555 for school maintenance blitz funding.

"The investment will also create more than 290 jobs."

Comments attributed to Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:

"It's fantastic news that Hedland Senior High School is getting a new sports hall with staff facilities and four general learning classrooms.

"In addition there will be refurbishments to the school's STEM facilities, IT laboratories, home economics laboratory, child care vocational training room and the Education Support Centre with Hardie House receiving a major refurbishment.

"These upgrades will go a long way to ensuring that staff and students at Hedland Senior High School have the best possible working and learning environments."

Comments attributed to Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel:

"I welcome today's confirmation of the scope of works for the Hedland Senior High School upgrades.

"This nearly 50-year old school is one of the oldest schools in the Pilbara, and I am proud that we are able to upgrade the facilities to the standard that the staff and students deserve.

"The $15 million investment will go toward upgrading the facilities the school has identified with me that need the most work done, creating jobs for local Pilbara workers.

"Hedland Senior High is a fantastic local school and I look forward to continuing to work with the school community."
