    3/02/2020 9:35 AM

    • In five years, Fiona Stanley Hospital's Emergency Department has cared for 520,000 people, including 120,500 children
    • Significant new services have been added, including the Family Birthing Centre and da Vinci robotic Surgical System

Today marks five years since Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) became fully operational, providing the opportunity to celebrate the hospital's many achievements in that time.

Since opening, there have been close to two million outpatient appointments and 13,000 telehealth appointments.

526,000 inpatients have received care, 14,250 babies have been delivered and 12,000 patients have been treated in the Intensive Care Unit.

Two McGowan Government election commitments have been delivered to improve patient care:

    • the $5 million da Vinci robotic Surgical System is ensuring patients are returning to normal activities faster and reducing their length of stay in hospital; and
    • the $1.8 million Family Birthing Centre, developed with extensive community consultation and research, is providing an alternative for women seeking a home-like birthing experience but within the safety of a hospital environment.

In addition, the hospital has become a centre of excellence in training health professionals with 720 junior doctors, 794 graduate nurses (including 39 midwives) beginning their training at FSH and 1,705 allied health students doing clinical placements.

FSH transplant teams have given 787 people another chance at life by performing 45 heart, 80 lung, 4 heart and lung, 471 bone marrow and 187 kidney transplants.

FSH volunteers have given more than 170,400 hours of their time, providing information and assistance to people attending the hospital, including dedicated volunteers in the Emergency Department.

Comments attributed to Health Minister Roger Cook:

"Fiona Stanley Hospital has exceeded expectations in the delivery of health care, not only for residents in our southern suburbs, but for thousands of Western Australians who have benefited from specialist care in purpose-built facilities for rehabilitation, burns and mental health.

"The growth and achievements over the past five years are the result of the skill, dedication and hard work of the staff and I extend my thanks for their fantastic efforts."
