Arts program to build capacity of outer metro communities

    14/01/2020 12:00 PM
    • Funding program to boost arts and culture in outer metropolitan Perth
    • Local governments to partner with arts or community organisations
    • Applications open February 11 for activities commencing on or after July 1, 2020

Perth's outer metropolitan communities will have more opportunities to participate in high-quality arts and cultural experiences thanks to a new pilot program opening next month.

The Outer Metro Arts Grant Program provides up to $50,000 for targeted local governments to partner with State funded arts entities and/or community organisations in presenting a broad range of activities.

The program complements local creative strengths and existing programs to increase participation and relevance to the local community.

Projects will support professional development opportunities for local artists, build capacity within the local government and contribute to the liveability of outer metropolitan Perth.

Local governments invited to apply to the pilot are the cities of Wanneroo; Swan; Kalamunda; Armadale; Kwinana; Rockingham, and the shires of Serpentine-Jarrahdale and Mundaring.

The Outer Metro Arts Grant Program is administered by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries. For more information, visit https://www.dlgsc.wa.gov.au/funding/arts-funding

Comments attributed to Culture and the Arts Minister David Templeman:

"The program responds to the exponential growth of outer metropolitan communities.

"In fact, our outer metropolitan communities make up 75 per cent of Perth's overall population growth.

"Serpentine-Jarrahdale is also the fastest growing region in Australia with a population increase of 51 per cent between 2011 and 2016.

"This program will build local capacity, ensuring more arts and cultural experiences presented in outer metro communities are also made by, and for, the local communities."
