    • Create X reciprocal artist exchange program details announced
    • Up to $20,000 available to artists and organisations to create and collaborate
    • Applications open in March 2020 for projects to be undertaken after July 1, 2020

Culture and the Arts Minister David Templeman today announced details of a grant program for Western Australian artists to take part in an exchange program with artists in South East Asia.

The Create X grant program was developed to encourage WA artists and artists from Singapore, Malaysia or Indonesia to create and collaborate across a range of art forms.

This collaboration and exchange goes towards the building of greater Asia capability, cultural awareness and stronger relationships between WA and our immediate neighbours, which is highlighted as a key cultural outcome in the State Government's Asian Engagement Strategy.

The grant program offers applicants up to $20,000 of funding towards travel and residency costs for artists, creative industry professionals and arts organisations.

Applications to the program open on March 3, 2020 and close on April 16, 2020.

The Create X program is administered by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries. For more information, visit https://www.dlgsc.wa.gov.au

Comments attributed to Culture and the Arts Minister David Templeman:

"The Create X exchange program will not only create new works and collaborations, but will also help develop new audiences and a wider cultural understanding of both WA and Asia.

"We are making details of the Create X program available now to allow interested artists and organisations enough lead time to develop the details of their proposed activities with their intended partners and collaborators.

"This program is the result of a trip I undertook to Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia in April 2019 with the specific aim of strengthening our artistic and cultural ties with South East Asia."

Comments attributed to Asian Engagement Minister Peter Tinley:

"I welcome the Create X grant program as part of our wider Asian Engagement Strategy.

"It is supported by other State strategies such as Invest and Trade in Western Australia and the State Economic Development Strategy 'Diversify WA'.

"Exchange programs such as this are a great way to strengthen ties with our Asian neighbours and trading partners, as well as raise the profile of the arts, culture and creative industries in WA and South East Asia."
