Planning Minister Rita Saffioti has approved a new local planning scheme for the City of Subiaco which prioritises greater density around activity centres and transport services.

The Minister congratulated Mayor Penny Taylor for her collaborative approach to local planning and for listening to what was important to the Subiaco community in accommodating future population growth.

The new scheme and the State's Design WA policy suite provides a framework to manage new development and complements the unique character of Subiaco.

Rezoning around existing activity centres such as Rokeby Road will also support local businesses by increasing vibrancy and population within a walkable catchment.

Under the new scheme, the City of Subiaco is well positioned to respond to the need for alternative housing options close to existing community facilities, established parks and transport services to meet Perth's growing population.

Development within the Subi East precinct that covers the former Subiaco Oval and Princess Margaret Hospital sites also takes infill pressure off other heritage areas of the City of Subiaco.

The broad intent of the local planning scheme modifications is to concentrate density away from areas of heritage and character significance, and focus density increases on areas close to existing services, public transport and major roads.

The new scheme replaces the existing planning framework, which has been in place in Subiaco since 2001. It reflects a more contemporary approach to local planning and accounts for the many reforms in planning legislation and practices that have been undertaken over the past two decades.

Comments attributed to Planning Minister Rita Saffioti:

"I welcome the City of Subiaco's progressive approach to their new local planning scheme, which I believe strikes the right balance.

"We need to ensure that we have greater housing choice for future generations, in areas close to where they will work - and that includes finding ways to accommodate growth across all suburbs.

"The City of Subiaco has developed a scheme that is sensitive to the existing character of the area while providing the instruments to meet the needs of the growing population.

"I acknowledge the strong views of the community and believe that having these conversations has ensured a good outcome that balances the need for change with the desire for neighbourhoods to retains their established character."

Comments attributed to City of Subiaco Mayor Penny Taylor:

"The City of Subiaco has listened to the community's views and responded by amending the scheme to incorporate their feedback resulting in a good outcome for our new local planning scheme and the future of Subiaco.

"Our long-term vision for the City of Subiaco is to accommodate growth responsibly while protecting the character and charm of our neighbourhood streets and suburbs.

"I look forward to seeing our vibrant inner-city community continue to grow and flourish."
