    • New mine highlights continuing success of Co-funded Drilling Program

Gold Road Resources and Gold Fields' $621 million Gruyere gold project was officially opened today by Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Johnston.

Located 200 kilometres north-east of Laverton, the Gruyere project is the single largest gold discovery in Western Australia in more than a decade.

The Gruyere deposit in the Yamarna greenstone belt was discovered by Gold Road in 2013 and confirmed as a world-class discovery in 2015 after the company drilled a 1,700-metre hole co-funded by the Exploration Incentive Scheme.

Mining commenced in November 2018, first ore was mined in January 2019, and the first gold was poured in June this year.

The impressive project has an estimated resource of 155.37 million tonnes, at an average grade of 1.32 grams per tonne. It is expected to produce 300,000 ounces of gold a year.

Comments attributed to Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Johnston:

"Congratulations to Gold Road and Gold Fields on the opening of Western Australia's newest gold mine.

"The Gruyere project is vitally important to Western Australia, not only because of its gold output, but also because it will provide around 250 jobs over the next 12 years and open up a new gold province.

"Gruyere is a powerful example of the value of the Exploration Incentive Scheme's flagship Co-funded Drilling Program, a long-standing initiative that the McGowan Government continues to support.

"This project is one of about 25 discoveries that have benefited from the scheme, other gold projects include the Tropicana East, Handpump and Dusk til Dawn gold projects.

"The Co-funded Drilling Program has offered funding to more than 940 projects since 2009, and allowed more of our State to be explored for the benefit of all Western Australians."
