Premier Mark McGowan was in Margaret River today to present a Lotterywest grant to the Margaret River Men's Shed to support the construction and fit-out of a new shed for the community group.
The $380,000 grant will make the Men's Shed available to more people and allow space for additional members to work on a project at any given time.
The grant will also go towards a shared meeting room, administration office, kitchen and toilets.
As a result, the Margaret River Men's Shed hopes to almost triple its membership, from its current 73 members to up to 200 people.
Western Australia is home to more than 180 Men's Sheds, which provide opportunities for members to connect with their community, while contributing towards meaningful projects.
The Shed has donated equipment constructed from their projects to local schools and also to nature play areas.
Further support for the upgrades will be provided by the Rotary Club and Lions Club of Margaret River, while the Shire of Augusta Margaret River has arranged Shire land and additional funds for the Shed.
Comments attributed to Premier Mark McGowan:
"I am delighted to support the expansion of this Men's Shed which is a valuable resource not only for its members, but for the broader Margaret River community.
"These sheds connect people, and the work their members do directly benefits the surrounding community including local schools and playgrounds.
"This Men's Shed will be a space for people to learn new skills, while forming a sense of belonging that is so important to our health and wellbeing."
Comments attributed to South West Region MLC Adele Farina:
"The Margaret River Men's Shed is an important community asset that has a long history in our town.
"Having met with the Margaret River Men's Shed earlier in the year and supported their application for funding to Lotterywest, I am particularly pleased they have been successful in securing this funding.
"This grant will help upgrade and expand the facilities so more people will be able to access the benefits provided by this important community group."
