Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray has congratulated legendary sports commentator Dennis Cometti AM on his imminent induction into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.

Cometti has an unrivalled 50-year career in sport, initially as an Aussie Rules footy player and coach and then becoming a sports broadcaster and the country's consummate commentator in footy, cricket and the Olympics.

Geraldton-born Cometti was a player and coach of WAFL side West Perth in his early days, but soon left the sportsground for a life behind the cameras and microphone, becoming one of Australia's most knowledgeable and much-loved commentators.

Cometti has already received numerous accolades for his contributions, including having the Media Centre at Optus Stadium being named in his honour.

Cometti will be inducted in the Hall of Fame at its sell-out 35th induction and awards night in Melbourne on Thursday, October 10, 2019.

Comments attributed to Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray:

"I congratulate Dennis Cometti, not just on being elevated to the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, but also for his outstanding and unrivalled sports career over the past 50 years.

"There are literally millions of Australians who have taken much pleasure whenever Dennis was working behind the microphone calling AFL games, as well as Test Cricket and the Olympics.

"His insights into the game, smooth delivery, sense of humour and clever use of language would linger in the minds of sports fans long after the event he was calling ended.

"It is only fitting that his fabulous efforts over the years be acknowledged by him being inducted to the Hall of Fame."
