- Ross Love appointed by State Government to lead consultation on proposed voluntary buy-back scheme in Port Hedland's West End
The State Government has appointed Ross Love to lead consultation and advise on terms for the proposed industry funded voluntary buy-back scheme in the West End of Port Hedland.
Work is continuing on implementation of recommendations from the Port Hedland Dust Management Taskforce Report, including planning controls and improved dust monitoring and mitigation.
Mr Love will consult with industry and the community on the proposed voluntary buy-back as well as the future management of the West End.
Mr Love has held a number of senior roles in Government and private industry.
He will visit Port Hedland next week to begin meeting with key local stakeholders, including homeowners, local government, mining industry representatives and the Pilbara Ports Authority.
Mr Love will report back to Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan and Planning Minister Rita Saffioti following the three-month consultation period on the terms and administrative arrangements of the proposed scheme.
Comments attributed to Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:
"Residents in the West End want certainty about their future options, and we are committed to delivering that certainty as soon as possible.
"Consultation on the proposal for a voluntary buy-back will be focused on delivering the best possible outcome for West End residents and for the broader Hedland community, while taking into account the critical importance of industry in the Pilbara to local jobs and the State's economy.
"Ross's appointment will ensure local residents and key stakeholders are heard and will enable Government to make decisions on the detail of a buy-back scheme."
Comments attributed to Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel:
"Home owners have told me they want a fair voluntary buyback scheme, similar to opportunity offered by Alcoa in Wagerup, and the State Government is working to deliver that option.
"Not all residents want to leave, which is why we must continue to focus on dust mitigation and land activation in the precinct.
"We will continue to work closely with home owners throughout design of the proposed voluntary scheme."
