Perth's hockey community has celebrated the opening of the Lakelands Hockey and Sporting Facility - with the brand new $6.53 million grassroots hub set to boost the sport in the growing southern suburbs.
Local member and State Government Minister Peter Tinley officially opened the new sporting hub alongside the City of Cockburn and members of the southern suburbs hockey community today.
The brand new facility includes new clubrooms and change rooms, a synthetic pitch, and two grass pitches.
The McGowan Government provided $1.25 million from the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF) in support of the $6.53 million project.
The City of Cockburn provided $4.8 million, with new tenants, the Fremantle Hockey Club, also contributing $500,000.
The complex will be the new home of the Fremantle Hockey Club and its 500 members, shoring up the iconic club's future and positioning it well to continue its long history of developing Western Australian hockey stars.
Located in South Lake, the Lakelands Hockey and Sporting Facility will help the sport continue to grow in line with demand, providing important mental and physical health benefits to the WA community.
Comments attributed to Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray:
"The southern suburbs have always had a strong and passionate local hockey following and this new facility ensures a bright future for that community.
"The new synthetic pitch will be able to be used for regional hockey and school sport and recreation needs. Having a well-respected, high-membership tenant in the Fremantle Hockey Club will ensure the facility becomes a key piece of hockey infrastructure for Western Australia."
Comment attributed to Willagee MLA Peter Tinley:
"The McGowan Government is always keen to support quality grassroots sporting projects through the CSRFF, and we thank the City of Cockburn and Fremantle Hockey Club for their dedicated work to bring this project to completion."
