    • Perth-based national hockey program given funding boost on the road to Tokyo 2020

The State Government has contributed $50,000 of travel and marketing funding to Hockey Australia's Bentley-based high performance program to provide support on the road to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Based at the Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University, the high performance program is Hockey Australia's national base.

It houses the Hockeyroos women's team and the Kookaburras men's team's training programs - two of Australia's most successful and well-known sports teams.

The funding is part of the Government's ongoing support package for the important program.

The Western Australian Government provides strong support to the sport of hockey in WA, having assisted with surface upgrades at Perth Hockey Stadium, as well as providing grassroots funding through the Country Sport Enrichment Scheme and the State Sporting Infrastructure Fund.

Comments attributed to Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray:

"The McGowan Government is delighted to continue to support hockey's national program, which includes two of Australia's most recognisable and successful teams, the Hockeyroos and the Kookaburras.

"Hockey has a strong and loyal following in WA and players from the Hockeyroos and Kookaburras work with local teams and have a key role in promoting hockey in WA.

"This funding is part of our ongoing support for hockey that stretches back to 2007, when the former Labor Government arranged to base the national men's and women's hockey programs in WA.

"This relationship has been beneficial for both Australian hockey and Western Australia - with the sport continuing to go from strength to strength from its Bentley base."
