Young people in Kalgoorlie are set to benefit from the latest round of McGowan Government funding aimed at encouraging people to become physically active and more involved in their communities.

Seventeen projects around Western Australia will receive $235,500 under the Targeted Participation Program which aims to engage people from various backgrounds who are statistically less likely to participate in sport and recreation activities.

Among the projects to receive funding is a gymnastics program run by the Kalgoorlie Youth Gymnastics Club in conjunction with the local Police and Community Youth Centre's (PCYC) Safe Space initiative.

Kalgoorlie's Safe Space participants, who are typically aged 7-16 years and have an Aboriginal background, will be able to take part in workshops at school and pursue gymnastics within a club setting.

The program will help three gymnastics coaches take their skills to the next level, and it is anticipated that at least 12 new gymnasts will be identified.

Other projects approved for TPP funding focus on activities such as basketball, hockey, surfing and off-road cycling.

The TPP is a joint initiative between the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and Healthway.

It aims to involve people from groups such as the Aboriginal community, girls aged 12 to 17, people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) backgrounds, people with disability, seniors aged over 60 and at-risk youths.

Comments attributed to Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray:

"I'm pleased that the State Government is supporting the Kalgoorlie PCYC's gymnastics project through the Targeted Participation Program.

"The program provides opportunities to people who are not involved in regular sport and recreation that enable them to build on their natural talents and skills, and introduce them to a club environment.

"Projects such as this are vital to engaging young people in healthy, active sport and fostering connected communities."

Comments attributed to Mining and Pastoral MLC Kyle McGinn:

"This is a fantastic announcement today for kids in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. The PCYC here has an excellent track record with engaging young people in their programs, and this funding will mean the gymnastics program in particular steps it up to the next level.

"I have seen how much of a difference the PCYC here makes to young people's lives. Having a safe space to learn a new skill and participate in a group is a really healthy way to be part of the community, and a vital part of the wellbeing of our young people in the Goldfields."
