    • Reconciliation Australia endorses VenuesWest's Reconciliation Action Plan
    • Launched by VenuesWest during National Reconciliation Week
    • Cements the State Government's commitment to building strong and respectful partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

    The State Government is another step closer in its commitment to reconciliation with the launch of VenuesWest's Reconciliation Action Plan this week.

    The plan is a result of work done by VenuesWest to build strong and respectful partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and create a pathway towards reconciliation.

    The plan, prepared in collaboration with Reconciliation Australia, articulates the importance of providing opportunities to indigenous people and organisations as a means of achieving positive outcomes for the Western Australian indigenous community.

    The plan, developed by a 10-person working group, outlines a strong framework of specific initiatives and actions that VenuesWest will pursue over the next two years in support of its commitment to reconciliation.

    The Reconciliation Action Plan is based on three key areas, as outlined by Reconciliation Australia: Respect, Relationships and Opportunities.

    Actions to be taken by VenuesWest as part of the plan include:

    • Enhancing relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities;
    • Increasing visibility of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through VenuesWest's communication and marketing channels;
    • Encouraging participation by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and community representatives on working groups, in consultations and on committees;
    • Supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander procurement opportunities;
    • Improving cultural awareness amongst all VenuesWest staff;
    • Ensuring the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags are displayed at all VenuesWest owned venues;
    • Developing a Best Practice Guide to Diversity Employment; and
    • Partnering with Work Smart to engage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander school-based trainees.

    Furthermore, in line with its commitment to reconciliation, the State Government recognises and values the importance of protecting and preserving indigenous traditions such as its iconic storytelling through art.

    Visual artist and cultural educator Jade Penangke from the Whadjuk/Balladong Nyoongar and the Eastern Arrernte peoples was commissioned to create the plan's artwork, which conveys the knowledge of the land and then events and beliefs of the indigenous people.

    Through multiple collaborations, VenuesWest has achieved a genuine and meaningful action plan focused on creating a more inclusive and culturally aware organisation and community.
