Boost for mental health services at Kalgoorlie Health Campus

    23/03/2019 7:00 AM
    • The State Government is expanding the capacity to provide mental health services at Kalgoorlie Health Campus
    • New funding of $3.8 million to increase mental health staff numbers at the hospital
    • Total of $10.48 million now dedicated to public mental health services in the Goldfields

The McGowan Government is providing an additional $3.8 million to the WA Country Health Service to expand existing inpatient mental health service capacity in the Goldfields.

The funding will pay for 12 full-time equivalent mental health staff including doctors, nurses and allied health professionals. This expansion will improve mental health inpatient treatment and care for people in the Goldfields region.

The increase in funding follows recommendations from recent reviews relating to improved staffing levels and a call for more mental health specialist staff at Kalgoorlie Health Campus.

Since 2015-16, there have been more than 250 patient admissions in the specialised mental health unit at Kalgoorlie Health Campus every year.

A number of improvements have already been made to the infrastructure to improve the mental health inpatient unit at the hospital.

The increase in funds comes from the Mental Health Commission and will bring the region's total funding for public mental health services to $10.48 million in 2018-19.

Comments attributed to Mental Health Minister Roger Cook:

"The McGowan Government puts patients first and this expansion will improve mental health inpatient treatment and care for the Goldfields community, so I am delighted to announce this $3.8 million investment in Kalgoorlie's hospital.

"The funding boost announced today will enhance the treatment provided to acute mental health patients, but we are doing much more. This new investment is in addition to $7.3 million already committed to establish a 10-bed, community mental health step up/step down service in Kalgoorlie - this will treat people suffering from less serious mental health problems.

"The McGowan Government is spending more money than ever before on mental health services across Western Australia, today we are demonstrating our commitment to the people of Kalgoorlie and the surrounding Goldfields."

Comments attributed to Mining and Pastoral Region MLC Kyle McGinn:

"As a community we know how important mental health services are for us living regionally. This $3.8 million investment sends a strong message to the people of Kalgoorlie-Boulder that mental health support will be available when we most need it.

"This funding is vital to strengthening the mental health services available to residents of the Goldfields. The State Government takes mental health very seriously and this significant contribution is evidence of that commitment to regional areas.

"It's clear the McGowan Government has the right priorities when it comes to looking after the health of regional people.

"I know recently there have been some concerning issues, particularly regarding the mental health treatment service for young people, this commitment shows that we are listening and we are working hard for our constituents every step of the way."
