- Four officers awarded the Australian Police Medal
- Strong representation from regional WA
Four WA Police officers have been awarded the Australian Police Medal for their outstanding contribution to the community of Western Australia.
The recipients come from a range of ranks and backgrounds, all making significant career contributions to the Western Australia Police Force and the communities they serve.
Commander Stuart Bartels has been acknowledged for his 34-year career, which started with 13 years in regional policing and has developed into leadership and innovation roles.
In recent years Commander Bartels has transformed the Forensic and Business Information portfolios, and is currently Commander for the Metropolitan Region (North).
Brevet Senior Sergeant Revis Ryder has the distinction of leading the State's first entirely indigenous-run police station at the Warakurna Multi-Function Police facility.
His innate cultural understanding has assisted in bridging the gap between Aboriginal people and the justice system.
Pilbara Senior Sergeant Mark Fleskens has also had much to do with the Aboriginal community as Officer in Charge of Newman Police Station, the culmination of 39 years of service.
His participation in the Martu Leadership Program is helping teach the remote Martu community about mainstream legal justice and offering diversions from the justice system.
Sergeant Kylie Simmonds has served with distinction in areas such as Serious and Organised Crime, the Coronial Investigations Unit and both frontline and investigative regional and metropolitan policing.
Her ongoing contribution as a foster parent to many children complements the valuable relationships she is continuing to develop in regional communities in the Pilbara District.

"This honour is only proper recognition for their selfless and dedicated commitment to duty over many decades, and all of our hardworking police officers can draw inspiration from them.
