The McGowan Government has today congratulated Western Australian-based Naval Ship Management (NSM) Australia for being awarded the sustainment program for the Royal Australian Navy's two Landing Helicopter Dock ships (LHDs) at the Garden Island Defence Precinct in New South Wales.
NSM will provide the sustainment and support of two Canberra Class LHDs, HMAS Canberra and HMAS Adelaide, and the 12 LHD Landing Craft (LLCs).
The program, worth about $1.5 billion over 15 years, will begin in July 2019 after an initial six-month phase-in period, and will support more than 1,000 direct and indirect jobs throughout Australia.
Within the contract, NSM has committed to maximising opportunities for Australian industry through engaging their existing supply chain and working with potential new Australian suppliers.
NSM is part of the Warship Asset Management Alliance (WAMA) with BAE systems, Saab Australia and the Commonwealth Government.
The WAMA is responsible for the sustainment, maintenance and upgrade of the Royal Australian Navy's Anzac Class Frigates, work that is undertaken at the Australian Marine Complex in Henderson.
Comments attributed to Premier Mark McGowan:
"This is terrific news for Naval Ship Management and its team at Henderson, in Western Australia.
"I congratulate NSM for its commitment to maximising opportunities for Australian industry.
"My Government is committed to supporting the State's defence industry as a priority area to diversify the economy and create jobs for Western Australians."
Comments attributed to Defence Issues Minister Paul Papalia:
"I congratulate NSM for being awarded the sustainment contract for the Landing Helicopter Dock ships and their Landing Craft.
"The award of this work to NSM reflects the success it has had as part of the Warship Asset Management Alliance sustaining the Anzac Class Frigates here in WA.
"NSM has maximised local industry content through the use of Small to Medium size Enterprises and will continue this approach as they commence the LHD sustainment program."
